The United States plans to ease travel restrictions for fully vaccinated visitors from Canada and Mexico starting in early November. These bans have been in effect for over 18 months.
The new rules will be introduced in stages. The first phase, which began in early November, will allow fully vaccinated visitors traveling for non-essential reasons such as friends or tourism to cross US land borders. In the second phase, which will begin in early January 2022, the vaccination requirement will apply to all arriving foreign travelers. This requirement will not depend on the purpose of your travel to the United States.
The United States has been limiting non-essential travel by land along its borders with Canada and Mexico since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and is extending those restrictions monthly. However, air travel is between the United States and these countries. In addition, the restrictions do not apply to cross-border trade, US citizens and lawful permanent residents, or people traveling for medical purposes or to attend school, among others.
The last set of restrictions expires on October 21. Senior administration officials said the restrictions on cross-border travel will remain in place until a date to be announced shortly in November.
